Trader’s life. A day at St. Hilarion Castle

My kids won’t allow me to sit at home lol After the visit to an ancient renewed village we decided to see St. Hilarion Castle. What can I say – it took my breath away, incredible views and a lot of love there. How could people in the 11 century build it on the 760 meters top?

Many people think the castle was named after Saint Hilarion, who lived in the 4th century. But nope. It was named after another person, whose name was also Hilarion, but he lived in the 11th century. He began Cyprus fortification and started building of 3 castles. One of them was later named after him, other two – Kantara and Buffavento have a long history too. So, the main idea was to see pirates ships coming and get ready to protect Cyprus from invaders.

Castle has three wards – lower and middle served for economic (house) purposes, and the upper one became a royal suit of Lusignan King. Much of the castle was dismantled by the Venetians in the 15th century to reduce the up-keeping cost of garrisons. There are a lot of legends about this place. One of the most famous says Prince John decided his bodyguards betrayed him and killed them. They were falling from his tower one by one. The tower sits on a cliff high above the lower castle.

Most of all we liked the outstanding Queen’s window. It’s genuinely piece if art – and, OMG, what view… I have no words. Walking there, I thought about how it would be great to live in this Castle in Middle age. But what could I do there without internet and my trading platform? Lol, Well, that is one of the main reasons I love trading so much. It gives financial freedom to travel and see amazing places like this one.
